Breath Prayer:: “I trust God’s work in __________; I trust God’s work through __________”

Trust doesn’t come naturally for most of us. We like control. We want to see the whole picture, to know the outcome. But faith doesn’t work that way. Faith invites us to trust God’s work, even when we can’t see it fully. That’s where this breath prayer becomes so powerful: “I trust God’s work in __________; I trust God’s work through __________.”

‍Trusting God’s Hand in the Hidden Places

Think of Joseph in Genesis. Sold into slavery, falsely accused, and imprisoned, Joseph had every reason to doubt God’s plan. But Joseph trusted God’s work in his circumstances—and through them. Eventually, he could say, “You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20).

This prayer invites us to reflect on the areas where we’re struggling to trust God. It’s a way of surrendering control and believing that God is working, even when we can’t see how.

‚ÄçHow to Practice the Prayer

1. Fill in the Blanks:

   – ‚ÄúI trust God‚Äôs work in my family; I trust God‚Äôs work through my relationships.‚Äù

   – ‚ÄúI trust God‚Äôs work in my church; I trust God‚Äôs work through my ministry.‚Äù

2. Inhale: ‚ÄúI trust God‚Äôs work in __________.‚Äù

3. Exhale: ‚ÄúI trust God‚Äôs work through __________.‚Äù

4. Repeat: Focus on one area at a time, letting the words sink in.

When I first began using this prayer, I noticed how much anxiety I carried about my ministry. I wanted every detail to succeed, every effort to bear fruit. But as I repeated this prayer, I began to trust that God was at work—even in my perceived failures. That trust gave me peace and freed me to let go of outcomes I couldn’t control.

‚ÄçTrusting in Discipling Relationships

This prayer isn’t just for personal reflection—it’s a tool for discipling others. Use it to guide conversations:

Р“Where are you finding it hard to trust God’s work?”

Р“How might God be working through this challenge in your life?”

As a group, pray the breath prayer together, filling in the blanks based on your shared experiences. Trust is contagious. When we see others leaning into God’s work, it encourages us to do the same.

‚ÄçTrust as a Posture

Trusting God doesn’t mean everything will make sense. It means we believe He’s present and active, both in us and through us. Let this prayer remind you of that truth today.
