Restoring Communities Through Spiritual Direction and Mentoring: The Story of Eleos Church

At Exponent Group, we are passionate about equipping and empowering leaders through spiritual direction, faith-based counseling, and Christian discipleship. One recent example of our work is our partnership with Eleos Church in Singapore, where we witnessed the profound impact of spiritual transformation on a struggling community.

Understanding the Need for Healing and Formation

Eleos Church reached out to Exponent Group after enduring significant hardship. Following a church split caused by abusive leadership, the remaining congregation faced deep wounds and uncertainty about how to move forward. To support them, we began with a foundational step: understanding their unique needs.

Churches like Eleos often require intentional care and spiritual formation before leaders feel ready to move toward new opportunities. Grief work and reconciliation were critical first steps in this instance, as the congregation needed healing before they could effectively serve others.

Facilitating Spiritual Transformation

Throughout 2023, Exponent Group collaborated with Eleos to facilitate grief and reconciliation sessions for both current members and those who had been estranged. These sessions aimed to foster healing and strengthen relationships, offering the community a renewed sense of hope and purpose.

By 2024, the transformation within Eleos Church became evident. Leaders from both Eleos and another Singaporean church we had equipped earlier joined forces to facilitate an Exponent-designed retreat. This retreat brought together over 100 Asian church leaders caring for orphans and abandoned children. Drawing on their own journey of spiritual mentoring and faith-based counseling, Eleos leaders were able to guide others through recovery and restoration.

Moving at the Pace of Inside Leaders

At Exponent Group, we understand that true spiritual transformation takes time. It’s not about applying a quick-fix strategy but about building relationships and discerning the right steps to form disciple-making leaders. We believe in moving at the pace of the community, allowing leaders to heal, grow, and eventually take ownership of their ministry.

This approach ensures that the work we do is sustainable. Leaders equipped through spiritual mentoring and Christian discipleship are empowered to replicate these practices within their own communities, creating a ripple effect of restoration.

Empowering Leaders to Restore Their Communities

Our ultimate goal is to equip Inside Leaders—those who are already embedded in their communities—with the skills and confidence to lead transformation. In the case of Eleos Church, we saw firsthand how this approach can multiply impact. The leaders we worked with not only experienced healing themselves but also used their experiences to care for other exhausted ministers in their context.

By fostering spiritual transformation through spiritual direction and mentoring, Exponent Group enabled Eleos leaders to bring peace, hope, and restoration to others, turning their pain into a powerful testimony of God’s redemptive work.

A Call to Partner in Transformation

At Exponent Group, we believe that spiritual direction, faith-based counseling, and Christian discipleship have the power to transform individuals and communities alike. The story of Eleos Church serves as a reminder of what can happen when leaders are equipped to restore their own communities and beyond.
