Imaginative Prayer: Jesus Calms the Storm

  "Peace! Be still!"   (Mark 4:39)

Mark 4:35-41 tells the story of Jesus calming a violent storm, an account that speaks to the authority and care of the Divine. Through imaginative prayer, we can step into the boat and hear Jesus’ command to the chaos—both outside and within us.

This passage invites us to consider not just the storm on the Sea of Galilee but the storms of anxiety, doubt, and fear that rage in our lives. Begin by reading the passage slowly. Picture the boat rocking, the waves crashing, and the fear on the disciples’ faces. Imagine yourself in the boat. Are you panicked, frustrated, or resigned? See Jesus asleep. What emotions arise as you notice the contrast between your fear and Jesus’ calm? When Jesus stands and rebukes the storm, what do you feel? What does Jesus’ presence reveal about trust?

Reflect on the peace Jesus offers in the midst of storms. This story reminds us that God’s presence doesn’t eliminate challenges but transforms how we endure them. In discipling relationships, this practice can create space for honest conversations about fear. Share reflections: “What are the storms in your life? How might Jesus be calling you to trust?”

Jesus’ words, “Peace! Be still,” aren’t just for the sea—they are for us. Through imaginative prayer, we hear those words in our lives and experience the assurance of God’s presence.
